Dr. Hideharu Morishita is the leading force behind GIS Technology Transfer to Pakistan. On 24th January 1997, he met Mr. Malik Meraj Khalid (then caretaker) Prime Minister of Pakistan and introduced how GIS technology can help Pakistan for better planning and management to achieve the target of Sustainable Development. The Prime Minister welcomed this idea and in September 1997, Pakistan Society of Geographic Information Systems (PSGIS) was established to provide a practical platform for GIS Technology Transfer. PSGIS under the continuous and attentive guidance of Dr. Hideharu Morishita was very successful to organize workshops and international GIS conference in Pakistan. Malik Meraj Khalid accepted to Patronize this non profit organization and facilitated education complex of Barki for Research and development activities of PSGIS. Establishment of first ever National GIS Development and Application Center of Pakistan at Barki is one of the progressive and valuable contribution of Anjuman Ikhwan e Islam (NGO which is presided by Malik Meraj Khalid). This NGO is very successfully working for the promotion and uplifting of education in the rural sector of Pakistan. The contribution of Dr. Hideharu Morishita is very well recognized
by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Federal Ministry of Local Government
and Rural Development, Capital Development Authority CDA (Planning
Wing), Ministry of Housing and Physical Planning, Punjab; Lahore Development
Authority LDA (Town Planning) and several other planning institutions in
Pakistan.
