Malik Meraj Khalid, former (caretaker) Prime Minister of Pakistan is well known in Pakistan and abroad for his great contribution to promote and uplift education in rural areas of Pakistan. He established an organization ANJUMAN IKHWAN E ISLAM at BARKI, Lahore in 1939 (8 years before creation of Pakistan). His contribution to educational sector and rural development has a history of around 60 years. He has been the Chief Minister of Punjab, Speaker of National Assembly of Pakistan and at present he is assigned as RECTOR , International Islamic University, Islamabad, Pakistan. On 24 January 1997, Dr. Hideharu Morishita, Faculty of Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok met Mr. Malik Meraj Khalid (then caretaker) Prime Minister of Pakistan. The P. M. Concluded the meetings with his words as: “I assure whatever experience I have gained in life to do something for socioeconomic development of our country, I shall continue to associate myself and do what I can for the promotion and development of GIS Technology in Pakistan”
These remarks of Prime Minister resulted in establishment of Pakistan Society of Geographic Information Systems (PSGIS) in September 3, 1997 to provide a practical platform for GIS Technology Transfer. Later during the first GIS Workshop in National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Malik Meraj Khalid accepted to Patronize this non profit organization. He offered hosting of the first International Conference on Development and Applications of GIS at Ikhwan Education Complex Barki. Establishment of first ever National GIS Development and Application Center of Pakistan at Barki is one of the progressive and valuable contribution of Anjuman Ikhwan e Islam (NGO which is presided by Malik Meraj Khalid). This NGO is very successfully working for the promotion and uplifting of education in the rural sector of Pakistan.
