Graduate School [Environmental Design Program]
Aim of the program
We get so used to the places and events in our daily lives that we stop taking much notice. For example, we may drive down a road for 10 years but fail to notice much of the detail. The Environmental Design program makes us take more notice and to look deeper at our environment. A parcel of land, for instance, is rich in natural conditions, history, and social, and legal systems.
1. Masterfs course
1.1 Time required
1.2 Course Requirements
- Take one of the following subjects: Philosophy of Law (2 credits), Expressions in Japanese (2 credits), and Public Policy and Project Valuation (2 credits).
- Take the Seminars in Social Engineering every term.
- Obtain at least 30 credits. 24 must be from the Department of Social Engineering, and 12 must be from the optional units listed below.
- Complete the masterfs dissertation or meet the requirements, described below, to proceed to the doctoral course .
- Pass the final examination.
- Optional units:
- Advanced Theories and Practices in Urban and Community Design (2 credits), Advanced Theories and Practice in Urban Land Use Planning (2 credits), Advanced Topics in Civic Design (2 credits), Advanced Theories in Socio-Space (2 credits), Advanced Topics in Historical Landscapes (2 credits), Advanced Theory in Community Design (2 credits), Regional Information Planning (2 credits, subject from another department), and Land and Regional Planning (2 credits, subject from another department)
If you intend to improve your planning and designing skills, you are advised to take Advanced Exercises in Space Design, and Advanced Planning Exercises in Social Engineering.

1.3 Proceeding to the doctoral course
If you intend to proceed to the doctoral course you may be exempt from writing the master thesis and doing the first year of the doctoral course. First you will need to get recognition as an gexpected doctoral studenth and then you will need to meet the requirements to proceed to the doctoral course:
- If you meet the following requirements during your first year of the masterfs course you will be recognized as an expected doctoral student.
- At the end of the second year of the masterfs, pass the research proposal examination, a 30-minute presentation followed by a 30-minute discussion, which is assessed by at least three faculty members.
- Expected students will be conferred the masterfs degree if they obtain the required credits from the Public Policy Design Program, and present a discussion paper instead of the masterfs dissertation. They will be permitted to proceed to the doctoral course, and moreover, if they can meet the requirements for the advanced candidate, they will be regarded as an advanced candidate.
- To change the program, you will need permission from your supervisor and the program director. Meeting the requirements of the expected doctoral student, entrance, and the advanced candidate are also required.
- If you do not proceed to the doctoral course, you have to meet all requirements for the masterfs degree in order to get the master degree (see section 1.1).
1.3 Changing Program
To change program, you will need permission from the supervisor, and the program directors of both programs, in addition to meeting the entrance requirements of the course you wish to enter.
2. Doctoral Requirements
2.1 Time required
Usually three years.
2.2 Course Requirements
- Take one of the following subjects: Philosophy of Law (2 credits), Expressions in Japanese (2 credits), or Public Policy and Project Valuation (2 credits).
- Take the Seminars in Social Engineering (2 credits) every term.
- Pass the examination to become an advanced candidate.
- Complete the doctoral thesis.
- Pass the final examination.
- Take Planning Administration A/B if you enter while in work
2.3 Requirements to become an advanced candidate
- Finish two subjects from the compulsory course units.
- Pass the research proposal examination which is a 30-minute presentation about your proposed research, followed by a 30-minute discussion. It is assessed by at least three faculty members
2.4 Requirements to complete the doctoral course
- Finish the midterm proposal
- Have at least 2 doctoral points. Doctoral points are calculated as follows:
- A paper in a journal (with peer review) whose language should be either English or Japanese: 1 point
- Pass the doctoral thesis examination
2.5 Changing course or program
To change the course or the program, you will need permission from your students must obtain permission from their supervisor, and the program or course director.
