1. Overview of the program
This international program focuses on the “Effective Utilization of Technology” not only for students who have engineering background but also for those who have studied managerial subjects and/or social sciences in their universities. It is expected that those students can deepen their knowledge and skills on technology, as well as learn useful concepts, approaches and techniques for managing technologies in order to contribute for sustainable development in the twenty first century.
This program has two major features. The education is provided in English throughout the study period although students can? and are recommended to ? take courses in Japanese language for the regular graduate school. That is, the formal language in this program is English, starting with the application and ending with obtaining the doctoral or Ph.D. degree, e.g., for lectures, exercises, experiments, colloquium, master thesis, oral examination, mid-term examination, doctoral dissertation. However, both English and Japanese will be used in workshops since there is some collaborative work with Japanese students.
As the other main feature, this program is organized through an Integrated Master and Doctoral Education, which is designed as combined program from master to doctoral (or Ph.D.) course. These two courses, in general, should not be separated from each other. Even master degree holders are required to enroll from the beginning of the master course. A student who enrolls in this program must take qualifying examination of master degree after around one year, and he/she might be conferred a master degree. For those who want to pursue only in the master course, please contact a professor whom you wish be your supervisor during the program ? we call him or her an intended advisory professor ? to discuss about this matter. We do not accept students who start with the doctoral course in this program for any reason. For those who wish to pursue only in the doctoral course, please try to enroll in the regular doctoral course.
In the master course of this international program, a student who takes academic credits required for the master degree (see below in the “Curricula” section) and completes a master thesis earlier than the normal two year period may be able to shorten the period of study to a minimum of one year. In the doctoral course, a student may also be able to shorten the period of study to a minimum of two years, depending on his/her academic activities. The minimum period of the program for completing both the master and the doctoral course is three years.
2. Curricula
In this international program, there are three core curricula as follows:
- Courses related to “Technologies” provided by other international programs in the university (at least 10 credits required for the degree),
- Courses related to the “Utilization of Technology for Business Resources” including Personnel, Materials, Money and Information, which are provided by the Dept. of Industrial Engineering and Management and the Dept. of Innovation (14 credits), and
- Courses related to “Objects for Utilization of Technology” including Individual, Group, Organization, Community and Society, which are provided by the Dept. of Social Engineering, the Dept. of Human System Science and the Dept. of Value and Decision Science (4 credits).
In the master course, a student must make a short master thesis typically in 5-10 pages, and pass the qualifying oral examination. A student who completes the master course will subsequently enroll in the doctoral course.
In the doctoral course, a student must complete his/her doctoral dissertation and pass the defense.
3. Criteria for acceptance
Eligibility for enrollment of this international program will be:
1) Equivalent to Top 20% in excellent universities, typically those which have formal agreement with the Tokyo Tech for student exchange and/or research collaboration,
2) TOEFL score (paper) [or TOEIC] of 550 [or 765] or higher (for non-native English speakers), and
3) Good marks of undergraduate courses (e.g., GPA higher than 3.5).
If an applicant is not sure that he or she meets these criteria, please ask the intended supervisor or the department head with relevant information, e.g., academic record.
Applicants who meet the above-mentioned criteria will be required to take the Oral Examination.
4. Procedure of application
The following steps are required for those who wish to enroll in this international program:
- Prior to application (as soon as possible), an applicant must contact an intended advisory professor or the department head by e-mail to get further information and his/her acceptance of supervision in case of admission of the program. In this occasion, the applicant will send copies of the following documents by e-mail:
